What to Bring on your Alaska Fishing Trip?
At Kenai Drift Anglers, we check in all guests at 5:00 PM the evening before your guided fishing trip. This ensures we can give you the most accurate fishing report and set you up for the best possible day on the Kenai or Kasilof River.
Here’s how it works:
You’ll get a phone call and text message from your fishing guide at 5:00 PM the day before your charter.
We’ll confirm all the key trip details, including:
Exact time to meet your guide
Which boat launch we’re using (we rotate between over 15 river access points based on salmon movement)
Target species (what we are fishing for “your Invoice will have that info.”)
What gear to bring and how to dress for Alaskan river conditions
We’ll also give you a quick update on current fishing conditions and what to expect on the water.
This flexible check-in process is a big part of what sets our Kenai River and Kasilof River fishing trips apart—we don’t just run fixed-time, one-size-fits-all charters. We follow the fish and give you the best chance at success based on tides, fish runs, and river flow.
📲 Please keep your phone on and available around 5:00 PM. If we can’t reach you live, we’ll leave a voicemail and follow up with a detailed text and Google Directions to Boat Launch.
Alaska weather can change quickly—being prepared makes all the difference. Here’s what to bring on your guided trip with us:
Waterproof Pants and a Rain Jacket – Stay dry and comfortable
Hat and Sunglasses – Essential for sun and glare off the water
Dress in Layers – Especially in May, June, September, and October. Think ski-season layering: base layer, mid-layer, and outer shell
Thick Wool Socks or Double Socks – A must for Sockeye trips where we wade in glacier-fed water. We provide insulated wading boots, but wool socks will keep your feet warm
Fishing License – Buy online at adfg.alaska.gov and make sure the start time is set to 1:00 AM
Food & Beverages – Bring snacks and drinks for the day. For our early morning trips, we provide hot coffee and cups
That’s it—we supply the rest! Rods, tackle, boots, and gear are all provided.
Bringing your own waders?
You’re welcome to use them—just please make sure they don’t have metal cleats, as they can damage the diamond plate floors in our boats.
A valid Alaska Sport Fishing License is required for all anglers during the 2025 fishing season.
👉 Buy your license online here:
Alaska Department of Fish & Game – Purchase License
You do not need to print it out anymore—just make sure it’s saved on your phone and easily accessible. (And yes, try not to lose your phone!)
Licenses are also available for purchase in person at:
Sportsman’s Warehouse in Anchorage or Soldotna
Most local tackle shops and outdoor retailers
🎣 King Salmon Stamp:
Only required if you’re fishing for King Salmon (typically May 16 – June 10). If you’re not King fishing, you don’t need the stamp. If you’re unsure, we’ll confirm during check-in.
👶 Kids under 16 (non-residents) do not need a license—they fish free!
🕓 Set the license start time to 1:00 AM on the day of your trip so it covers your full charter day.
If you’ve booked a King Salmon fishing charter on the Kasilof River with Kenai Drift Anglers, you’ll need to add a 2025 King Salmon Stamp to your Alaska Sport Fishing License.
Our King Salmon trips run from May 16th to June 10th, when the early run is strongest on the Kasilof River. If your trip is outside of these dates, you’re most likely fishing for Sockeye or Silver Salmon, and in that case, you do not need a King Stamp. The stamp is only required when fishing for Kings.
💡 Not sure which species you’re targeting?
Check your invoice—it will list whether your trip is for King, Sockeye, or Silver Salmon.
🛒 Purchase your Alaska fishing license and King Salmon stamp here:
Alaska Fishing License & Stamps – ADF&G
We’ll also confirm the species during your check-in call the evening before your trip. Whether you’re fishing for early-season King Salmon on the Kasilof River, late-run Sockeye Salmon on the Kenai or Kasilof, or Silver Salmon in August and September, we’ll make sure you’re fully prepared and legal for your Alaska fishing adventure.
As you get ready for your adventure with Kenai Drift Anglers, here are a few non-essential but helpful items to bring along. These aren’t required, but they can definitely improve your comfort and convenience on the Kenai or Kasilof River:
Sunscreen – The Alaskan sun hits different—especially with glare off the water. Apply before and during your trip.
Insect Repellent – Conditions change by the day and launch spot. Bug spray is a good backup, especially on early mornings.
Warm Layers & Rain Gear – It can go from sunny to windy to rainy in a single trip. Dress in layers and pack a waterproof jacket.
Extra Socks – Dry feet are happy feet. If it rains or you step in a puddle at the boat launch, you’ll be glad you brought a spare pair.
Camera or GoPro – We’ll get photos, but if you want to capture your own moments or slow-mo that battle with a King, bring your gear.
Dry Bag or Ziplocks – Handy for keeping your phone, wallet, and any electronics dry on rainy days or splashy boat rides.
Snacks or Favorite Drinks – We provide hot coffee on early trips, but you’re welcome to bring along extra food, energy bars or even cold one to enjoy!
At Kenai Drift Anglers, we’ve got all the essentials covered—so don’t worry if you forget something. But bringing a few of these extras can help make your Alaska fishing trip even smoother and more enjoyable.
At Kenai Drift Anglers, your Alaska fishing experience doesn’t end when we leave the river—it continues all the way to your dinner table. After your day of fishing on the Kenai or Kasilof River, we professionally fillet your salmon right on the boat, ensuring clean cuts and top-quality handling.
You’ll receive your fish in a food-safe bag, ready for the next step. Just minutes from the river, our trusted partner Jolly Wally’s Fish Processing, located in the heart of Soldotna, takes it from there.
Jolly Wally’s is your one-stop shop for vacuum packing, flash freezing, and overnight shipping. Whether you’re flying out the next day or fishing multiple days with us, they’ve got you covered:
1 Day Processing “usually ready the next morning”
Overnight shipping to your home
Cold storage between trips
Airline-ready boxes for checking frozen fish as luggage
📍 We’ll provide easy directions to Jolly Wally’s during check-in, and their team knows our process—just walk in with your catch bag say you fished with Kenai Drift Anglers and they’ll handle the rest.
💡 Pro Tip: Save on Shipping – Fly with Your Fish
If your schedule allows, checking your frozen fish as luggage is the most cost-effective way to bring your salmon home. Once processed and boxed by Jolly Wally’s, your fish will stay frozen for 24–30 hours.
If you can pick up your fish in the morning, drive to Anchorage, and fly home the same day, you’ll avoid shipping costs that can range from $200–$350+ per 50 lb box. A box of wild Alaska salmon is worth well over $1,000, but it’s always nice to save a little.
That said, shipping is still the easiest and most popular option, especially if you plan to keep traveling around Alaska. Either way, we’ll help make the process smooth and stress-free.
Tipping your fishing guide is a lot like tipping your server at a restaurant—it’s a way to recognize the time, effort, and personal service you received throughout the day. At Kenai Drift Anglers, we and our partner guides on halibut charters and fly-out floatplane trips work long days during Alaska’s short fishing season with one focus: making your trip unforgettable.
From curing bait and prepping gear the night before to rowing or running the boat, helping land your fish, and filleting your catch—we give it everything we’ve got to give you the best experience possible on the Kenai or Kasilof River.
💲 The standard tip for an Alaska fishing guide is 15–20% of the total trip cost.
To make it simple, many guests tip around $40-50 per person (or $200 per private boat for a group of four).
While tipping is never required, it’s always appreciated and reflects the quality of your day on the water.
